International Women's Day

To mark International Women’s Day 2019, we co-hosted a community event in March at the Brighton Town Hall, celebrating women in sport.

Attracting 200 people, the theme of the event was ‘Balance for Better’ and aimed to raise awareness for a commitment to re-balancing gender inequality.

Victorian of the Year 2018, Susan Alberti AC, was keynote speaker and sat on our panel with four inspiring women, honouring their achievements and contributions to sport.

The event provided a platform for women and their experiences, while celebrating women in sport and strengthening the call for gender equality.  It also provided attendees with strategies they could take to advance gender equity in their local communities and sporting clubs.

Feedback from those at the International Women’s Day included:

  • Significant number indicating the need to ensure family-friendly facilities for sports and fitness centres, with flexible hours of operation;
  • Expression that it was essential to market sport generally and in schools, in a fun, positive way, whilst also communicating the benefits from a physical and mental wellbeing aspect;
  • A number of respondents desiring flexible hours and child care; and
  • Suggested initiatives including ‘bring a friend’ sports days, engagement events and greater use of mentors and instructors.
